The main materials seen are waste discharged by industries and agricultural activities.
Paraguay River, one of the largest in the country, offers important contributions to the life of the population, but their level of pollution reaches high peaks and very serious due to various factors. The basin is composed of major rivers flowing through the country.
According to a report by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA ), developed in 2006 by national institutions said that the Paraguay river assumes a major role not only for the purification of all sewage generated by resident populations of river relevant, but also other sources of pollution, such as industrial and agricultural activities that contribute directly and indirectly to impaired water quality due to its enormous wealth available.
The sanitary sewer is considered one of the most difficult sources to be treated , due to its large physical dimensions and expressive, requiring high investment for collection and treatment. Currently, treatment of sewage is very poor turning around only 10%, excepting the city of Asuncion where sewer installation estimated 75 % of its inhabitants.
However, in the metropolitan area , is the most polluted because of the 88 tons in the whole eastern basin, 80 % comes from the basin of the metropolitan area of Asuncion, where the highest population and about 20% are native from the Ypacara basin.
Regarding the diffuse loads originating in crop areas , was carried out only for the growing area , therefore, the majority of cattle found in basins studied extensively remain where contaminants originating from feces can be infiltrated into the ground along with rainwater, before reaching the rivers.
Referring to industrial loads , although they found some 3,745 industries registered at the time, about 75 % belong to the small-sized. The categories are food processing, followed impressions, furniture, chemicals, and not verified practically the petrochemical, pharmaceutical, or large-sized inks, which are the most polluting.
